Why does this happen?

Charles's Law states that the volume of a gas is directly proportional to its temperature (in Kelvin) when pressure is held constant. As temperature increases, gas molecules move faster and spread out, increasing volume. As temperature decreases, molecules slow down and move closer together, decreasing volume.
